Our Role
Project manager, design manager, funder liaison, cost advisor, principal designer, contract administrator, planning and building control liaison
The Carlton Road façade is North Notts College's main public facing elevation and by 2015 was in need of a facelift. The project was assisted by grant money being made available to improve student take-up.
As sole project manager on behalf of the College Simon liaised with the funding organisation, built the design team, provided cost planning advice, and drove the OJEU compliant procurement process, interviewing contractors and negotiating a contract sum that met budget requirements.
Through careful management and pragmatic detailing as asbestos removal works progressed savings were realised and additional works enabled, resulting in a far more integrated outcome than the budget had originally enabled.
The planning approved design already in place when Simon was appointed required an entirely independent structural steel frame founded on mini piles to carry the weight of terracotta tiles, windows and insulation to the first floor, and to allow the 1980’s central reception block to be cloaked in render.
Savings generated during the construction period, as the extent to which asbestos could be left undisturbed and encapsulated became clear, allowed for the full reception area to be refurbished and an external draught lobby to be added.
