Architects Group / Design North were enlisted to redesign Nexus House, a five-storey office building in the centre of Newcastle, creating a contemporary collection of office spaces fit for modern methods of working.
Nexus House, a five-storey landmark at the corner of Westgate Road and Saint James Boulevard in Newcastle city centre, has long been a familiar part of the streetscape as the former headquarters of the Tyne & Wear Metro. After the Metro operator relocated last summer, plans were progressed to modernise the building, with Architects Group / Design North securing planning permission to revitalise its interior and exterior for future tenants.
The brief was to reimagine Nexus House as a vibrant, contemporary office environment capable of attracting a diverse mix of occupiers, whilst working within the constraints of the existing building and respecting the building’s history. Where possible, existing elements have been proposed to be retained, whilst curtain walling and external glazing is set to be replaced with improved glazing which will improve the functionality and performance of the building, as well as enhance the external appearance. Internally, the spaces have been designed to be reconfigured and later fitted out to accommodate a range of companies, ensuring a desirable and adaptable space. The proposed development at Nexus House has been thoughtfully designed to respond positively to its prominent location within the Central Conservation Area, balancing the need for high-quality modernisation with sensitivity to local character, scale, and form.
Now that planning has been granted, work can begin on the next stage of detailed design, with Architects Group / Design North involved in ensuring the project lives up to the client’s expectations and delivers a high-quality and contemporary office building.
