A Newcastle-based architecture and interior design practice has transformed an existing warehouse into a sport and leisure complex, centred around new Padel court provisions. Design North, part of Architects-Group have been commissioned by Project Padel, Newcastle’s first Padel operator, to deliver a state of the art Padel complex in North Tyneside.
Padel is a racket sport with similarities to both squash and tennis, originating from Mexico, the sport has recently surged in popularity in the UK, with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) describing it as “the fastest growing sport in the world”. The game is usually played in doubles with a scoring system like tennis, but on a court similar to squash where the ball can bounce off any of the surrounding walls. Padel is both easy to learn, fun to play and is accessible to all ages and abilities and rapidly increasing in popularity.
The first Padel courts in Newcastle were introduced by Project Padel, a leading Padel operator on an ambitious journey to bring Padel to more communities across the region. With a hugely popular site already in Benton, Project Padel are more than doubling their operational capacity with the new venue in North Tyneside. With an offering of eight double Padel courts, three single Padel courts, two Pickleball courts spa facilities and a bar, the venue is set to be Newcastle’s largest indoor Padel facility.
The transformation of the former industrial warehouse into state of the art Padel facilities has been led by Design North, who have extensive experience in conversion and hospitality projects. Their knowledge and expertise has driven the facilities to be centred on the user experience, enabling sport, recreation and relaxation under one roof. The facilities are contemporary and minimal, allowing the sport to take centre stage, whilst natural materials and hints of industrial modernity create a luxurious but subtle backdrop.
This project will mark the first Padel project completed for Design North and Architects-Group, with many more in the pipeline across the North of England.
