Design North have been recognised for their recent work on the redesign of the Theatre Royal Newcastle by the prestigious Lord Mayor’s Design Awards.

The biennial awards ceremony, which has been running since 1994 celebrates excellence in architecture and design, highlighting projects that help improve the built environment across Newcastle upon Tyne. Winners are chosen based on criteria focusing on design quality, sustainability, contextual sensitivity and positive community impact.

Both projects were carefully considered and designed, ensuring the Grade I Listed building was respected and sensitively restored. Each project provides a unique space for the Theatre, before and after shows, giving customers opportunity to relax and contemplate their experience. Working with the wider design team, Design North orchestrated the interior design for both projects, involving a local artist to create a bespoke wallpaper for one of the restaurants, while Mawson Kerr took on the architectural design and enabled both ambitious projects to be creatively achieved.

The Lord Mayor’s Design Awards took place last night at Mansion House in Jesmond attended by Charlotte Allan from Design North, alongside Imogen McIntyre of MawsonKerr, Nathan Reynard representing the Theatre Royal, and Shane Murray from Meldrum Group. Their presence reflected the collaborative effort behind the Theatre Royal project, which brought together expertise from multiple disciplines. The team were recognised a ‘Commended Finalist’ for the two projects completed for the Theatre Royal one fronting Grey Street and another on Market Street.

With its rich architectural heritage and ongoing regeneration, Newcastle continues to champion design excellence and projects like the Theatre Royal demonstrate how thoughtful interior design can play a vital role in preserving the past while enhancing spaces for modern audiences.
